Star Wars Rumors:  Stand Alone Boba Fett and Young Han Movies!
If you have not heard Disney has big plans for its new toys.  In addition to Episode VII, due out in 2015, Disney has announced that they will be producing stand alone movies featuring some of the franchises biggest names.  Initially it was thought that a Yoda movie would be the obvious choice, but Entertainment Weekly revealed that a Young Han and Boba Fett would be the subjects of their own spin off films, with the Young Han being set between Revenge of the Sith and a New Hope, and Fett taking place between New Hope and Jedi.  These are exciting/terrifying times we live.

One Geek’s Opinion:  Star Trek vs Star Wars
When I came up with the concept of doing this series, I wanted to tackle some of the long running debates which have been a part of geek culture for an extended amount of time.  As far as I’m concerned, the Star Trek vs Star Wars debate is the grand daddy of them all.  Its a polarizing argument, pitting fan boy against fan boy, in verbal and even physical altercations which often end in broken friendships, broken spirits, and even the occasional broken plastic lightsaber.
So, where do I stand on this issue?  The easy answer is, I love both, but for very different reasons.  Star Wars is gritty, dirty, dark, sometimes terrifying.  The Star Wars universe is both futuristic, and ancient, taking cues from Buck Rodgers, as well as King Arthur.  It delves into deep philosophical concepts, religion, and power.
Star Trek on the other hand, is bright, shiny, and hopeful.  Gene Roddenberry’s future earth has attained a sort of utopia aura where disease, crime, and even money has no place.  Although conflicts occur, they are more often than not, chalked up to misunderstanding of cultural norms.  Exploration and human advancement has taken the place of the petty squabbles in the past. Star Trek show us how we can grow to be a better, more accepting and responsible people, it is social commentary dressed up as science fiction.
I’m evading stating my position in the debate, I know.  If you were to put a gun to my head, and make me choose, mind you this is my opinion and I am not stating that one is superior to the other as they are both AMAZING and have impacted my life in tremendous ways… I would have to pick Star Trek (commence flaming).
My reasoning is that, a world of peaceful exploration appeals to me more than constant struggle and war.  That is not to say that there is no war in Star Trek, one only has to look at the conflicts with Klingons in TOS, Borg in TNG, Dominion in DS9, the entire Delta quadrant in VOY, the poorly named Temporal Cold War in ENT, and thats not even looking at Khan, Klingons (again), Tom Hardy, and time traveling Romulans of the movies.  But war doesn’t seem to be the main goal, rather means to an end, or bumps in the road to obtain further knowledge and enlightenment.  For me, the exploration is what I love about science fiction, and that is why, should I be faced with eminent death and made to choose, I go trek… but hey, that’s just one Geeks Opinion.

JJ Abrarams to Direct Star Wars Episode VII!
This isnt really news anymore, I just failed to report it as I thought it was a joke… seriously. Although he will not be writing the upcoming Star Wars sequel, which means there will most likely be no time travel (maybe?), the creator of Lost, and Alias, and Director or Super 8, and yes Star Trek, has officially committed to direct Disney’s first foray into to the Star Wars Universe.     My reactions are mixed. I haven’t really accepted the fact that there will be a Star Wars VII, or that Disney actually wrestled the franchise away from George Lucas. So not only do I have to accept that Mickey owns Darth Vader, I am now faced with the realization that the savior of the Star Trek story is now at the helm Star Wars as well? It’s hard to get one’s head around, is this more power than one man should be able to wield? On the other hand, JJ has done this before; he is a man with vision, and a massive imagination, both pre-requisites for this herculean task. I am nervously optimistic, and excitedly awaiting the first lens flare soaked trailers to come!Star Wars VII concept poster by Bpps via Reddit

Mickey Purchases Star Wars
So, if you are that one person who hasn’t heard yet, let me fill you in. Yesterday Disney announced that it, after a year and a half of negotiating, has purchased the Star Wars franchise from George Lucas for a cool $4 Billion US Dollars, which gives George Lucas enough money to build his own full size Death Star… if Disney will grant him license. After the purchase Disney immediately goes on offense, announcing a new Star Wars trilogy, episodes 7, 8, and 9, with 7 already slated for a 2015 release, and the rest coming out every 2-3 years.
As a life long Star Wars fan, I am conflicted by this news. It bums me out that George Lucas has disappointed us again by selling out, seemingly putting himself before the fans who made him what he is. That said, Lucas wasnt doing anything with the franchise except making Yoda toilet seats, and Vader air fresheners, so the prospect of new Star Wars content is thrilling, plus putting some fresh blood into the franchise can only mean good things right? Lets be honest with ourselves, the next trilogy cant be any worse than the prequels, and even if they are we will still see them, then buy the blu-rays, and then buy a new “Complete Universe” box set when all 9 movies come back out. Disney could crap in a box, stick a fake light saber in it, and just spin that around on a turn table for 2 1/2 hours and we would all flock to see it.
I for one welcome our new overlords.

Things I do not need:  Star Wars R2D2 Lunch Bag with Sound
I look at Think Geek too much… way too much.  In fact I am a preminent Think Geek lurker.  I have been pursing the site for about 3+ years, and never once actually purchased anything, and for a very good reason.  Ill find one thing I like/love/cant live  without, so I throw it in my cart.  Then I find another, whats another $10 right?  Then its like “well the Airzooka is on sale right now” so what the hell, I just got paid.  Next think you know Im checking my credit card balance to see if I can swing the $499 Field Candy Space Tent, and the limited edition $449 Link on Epona statue.  That site is NSFW (Not Safe For Wallet).

Things I do not Need:  This Star Wars Wampa Ice Scraper Mitt
I live in North Carolina, so we never really get snow or ice, so I would never have any need for this… it doesn’t change the fact that I want it.  Simply the visual and sensory experience of slamming my white fur clad arm onto a iced windshield, and dragging my claws (scraper) across, flecks of ice and snow getting caught in my mane… and then, out of the corner of my eye, I see an intruder.  I lunge, he counters, removing my arm in the process.  My only though its, “now Im going to be late for work” seeing as I was not able to properly clean my windshield…
