Will a high power USB connections make any other power port obsolete?  Engadget thinks… maybe?

Last week the 100W Power Delivery spec was approved for both USB 2.0 and 3.0. That’s ten times what Thunderbolt can do, and it means that you can charge up your laptop or power most any peripheral via Universal Serial Bus. Naturally, the new specification relies on beefier cables to deliver maximum juice, but we won’t have to go replacing all our old wires — it includes a means to check attached cables and devices and set the voltage and amperage accordingly. Perfect, that means we won’t have to carry around bundle of proprietary power cords when we travel…

It would be pretty cool to be able to travel with JUST a few USB cables to charge all your gadgets.  Standardization, its a good thing.

The dreaded rumored new smaller connector on the iPhone is no longer a rumor.  A Techcrunch has recently verified that the new phone will be moving away from its standard 30 pin connector to a new 11 pin, form factor reducing set up.  If you listen closely you can hear the cheers from accessory producers who realize you are going to have to shell out more money to re-buy many of the same docks and connectors that you may already own.  I feel bad for the dude who just shelled out $30,000 for the 700lb Behringer “fridge” dock… maybe they will let you trade in for the upgraded model for a discount?

Meet Wemo, Belkin’s new “Home Automation” system.  Comprised of two pieces of hardware, the backbone of the system the home control switch, and the motion sensor, as well as a free mobile app, Belkin gives the promise of complete control of your home’s functions utilizing your wi-fi network.
From Belkin:

“Belkin’s new WeMo system is home automation made easy. It’s completely modular, so you can control as much or as little of your home as you like. Turn on a light in another room, or turn it off from across town. Put your house on a schedule—living room lights go on in the evening, kids’ TV goes off at bedtime. You can check to make sure you turned the iron off, after you’ve already left the house. Have a fan go on before you get home. WeMo can even guard the front door.  WeMo is your home at your fingertips.”

The price point seems promising, $49.99 for the control switch, and $59.99 for the motion sensor.  Per Belkin’s website, it seems as if a baby monitor and garage door opener are on their way.  Let me just say, that I could not want this more.

This may actually be “Something I Do Need.”  I have always liked the Porta Pro’s both for their retro look and, apparently amazing audio performance, however I have never quite been tempted enough to pull the trigger.  Now, however, with the KTC edition sporting inline three button remote and mic, I think they will make it to my Amazon wish list.
