I have been struggling with the idea of changing my mobile carrier.  I have been a Verizon faithful for about 10 years now, and I am considering switching to Sprint, due to the fact that it will be cheaper to combine my plan with my wife’s, and because, for the moment anyway, Sprint is the only carrier still offering unlimited data. Anyway, I have been doing some research into carriers, who is better, blah, blah, blah, when I stumbled upon this recent article over at The Verge, which was an absolutely fascinating expose on how the mobile phone industry in America is essentially dictated by the carriers, and by doing so, is suppressing innovation by the big names, and preventing any small time start ups from getting into the game.  The piece that stuck out to me the most was the below quote from Columbia law professor Tim Wu  ”The carriers have always been wary of ‘excessive’ innovation in the mobile space because of the danger that it might make mobile service cheaper,”  I realize its naive to think that these giant corporations were looking out for my best interest, but I guess I always thought that innovation, and competition is good for business right?„, right? Hey, are you a Verizon subscriber?  Me too!  Did you get granfathered into the unlimited data plan?  Hey me too!  Though it would last forever?  So did I!   Unfortunately Verizon disagrees.  According to multiple reports, the wireless giant is backtracking on its promise to grandfather in unlimited accounts, announcing earlier this week that all unlimited 3G subscribers would be forced to choose one of the tiered payment options when they upgrade to a 4G LTE phone plan.  If you are about to upgrade, like me, you may want to take a look at Sprint’s unlimited 4G plans… just sayin.
