Doctor Who: Asylum of the Daleks Recap
I trust everyone had a splendid labor day weekend, now we are back with as spoiler free a recap as possible of the Doctor Who season premire entitled Asylum of the Daleks.
The premise of this episode is that the Daleks need the Doctor (an Rory and Amy as well I guess?) to help them destroy the “Asylum of the Daleks.” The Asylum is where they keep all their crazy, nutzo Dalek cousins who are so out there that they scare the established Dalek coalition, kind of like that one pyromaniac uncle that you don’t invite to Christmas anymore. They need the Doctor because he ‘aint afraid of no Dalek.
At it base, this episode revolves around the tormented relationship between the Doctor and the Daleks. The Daleks are the Doctors first enemy (unless you count the caveman Kal from the very first episode, the Daleks appear in episode 2), and I have seen their relationship compared, somewhat appropriately, to the Batman and the Joker. They have fought each other to a stand still, neither can really destroy the other, and it may be said that their very existence makes the other stronger. This is really just another chapter in their sick, weird relationship.
From a wider angle, this is just another fairly fun-filled, exciting romp, yet it maintains the dark undertones of loss and fear that is common in most Moffat’s run with the Doctor. It is a great way to kick off the season, and although I haven’t seen many of the old series, this one may set a record for the number of times the words “Doctor Who” are uttered (just in case you forgot what you were watching). Im hoping next weeks “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” will be a little more whimsical, and a little less dark and brooding.
