Big news broke over the weekend regarding the newest Marvel movie.  According to multiple outlets (Io9, Comics Beat, Huffington Post, Entertainment Weekly, and IGN to name a few) the next movie will feature the Guardians of the Galaxy.  Many of you are asking yourself “Who are the Guardians of the Galaxy?” a question I must admit even I asked.  I had heard of the Guardians I was thinking it was some mix of Nova, Beta Ray Bill, Silver Surfer, Captain Marvel the standard Galactic heroes.  I did a little exploring, and found I was very very wrong.  There appear to be two incarnations of the group, the original premiering in the late 60s, and the current crop, which everyone speculates the movie will be based on, see picture above of Guardians #1 which debuted in 2008.

So, then, how do these guys, gals, raccoons, trees, and dogs fit in with the rest of the Avengers?  Well, as is common knowledge if you saw the Avengers, or read any nerdy blog in the last few weeks, the big villain of Avengers 2 will be Thanos.  Many of the Guardians have had past relations with Thanos, and thus could provide a nice bridge between the earthbound Avengers and the ethereal Thanos.  Gamora for example (the skimply clad Green lady on the right) is an assassin trained by Thanos before turning against him, and Drax the Destroyer (big green tattooed guy also on the right) was a human killed by Thanos, but whose spirit found the alien body you see here, whose main goal is revenge.  The whole crew, along with many of the other Marvel galactics had a run in with the Mad Titan himself a few years ago in a 2010 cross over.

I have not read  ”The Thanos Imperative”  but it is rumored to be the basis for the new film, and covers many of these characters and many many more.  So if you are looking to get a better feel for the Guardians, the Galactic side of the Marvel Universe, Thanos, or just glean some insight on the next movie, it maybe worth investing some of your time and money into this story line… it just made my wishlist for sure.
